About the author of The Axe by R.K. Narayan
Resipuram
Krishnaswami Narayan (1906-2001) was one of the foremost Indian writers in
English. He wrote many short stories and novels. Some of his well-known books
are The Man-Eater of Malgudi, The Guide, The Sweet Vendor and The English
Teacher. He was awarded Padma Bhusan in 1964. The present text is an edited
version of his short story ‘The Axe’.
রেসিপুরম কৃষ্ণস্বামী নারায়ণ (১৯০৬-২০০১) ইংরেজির অন্যতম শীর্ষস্থানীয় ভারতীয় লেখক ছিলেন। তিনি অনেক ছোট গল্প ও উপন্যাস রচনা করেছিলেন। তাঁর কয়েকটি বিখ্যাত বই হ’ল দ্য ম্যান-ইটার অফ মালগুডি, দ্য গাইড, দ্য সুইট ভেণ্ডার এবং দ্য ইংলিশ টিচার। ১৯৬৪ সালে তিনি পদ্ম ভূষণ পুরস্কারে ভূষিত হন। বর্তমান পাঠ্যটি তাঁর ছোট গল্প ‘দ্য এক্স’ এর সম্পাদিত সংস্করণ।

UNIT 1 (Bengali Meaning)
Velan was
perfectly contented and happy.
ভেলান পুরোপুরিভাবে পরিতুষ্ট এবং খুশি ছিল।
He demanded
nothing more of life.
তিনি জীবনের আর কিছুই দাবি করেননি।
As far as
he could see, the people in the big house too seemed to be equally at peace
with life.
তিনি যতদূর দেখতে পেলেন, বড় বাড়ির লোকেরাও মনে হয়েছিল জীবনের সাথে সমান শান্তিতে রয়েছে।
One saw no
reason why these good things should not go on and on for ever.
এই ভাল জিনিসগুলি চিরকালের জন্য চালিয়ে যাওয়া উচিত নয় বলে কোনও কারণ একজন দেখেনি।
But Death
peeped around the corner.
কিন্তু মৃত্যু কোণের চারদিকে উঁকি দিয়েছিল।
One
midnight he was awakened and told that the master was dead.
এক মধ্যরাতে তিনি জেগে উঠে বললেন যে মাস্টার মারা গেছেন।
“What is to
happen to the garden and to me? The sons are no good,” he thought at once.
“বাগানের এবং আমার কি হবে?” ছেলেরা ভাল নয়, ”তিনি তখনই ভেবেছিলেন।
And his
fears proved to be not entirely groundless.

The sons
were no good, really.
ছেলেরা আসলেই ভাল ছিল না।
They stayed
for a year more, quarrelled among themselves and went away to live in another
house.
তারা আরও এক বছর থাকল, নিজেদের মধ্যে ঝগড়া করল এবং অন্য বাড়িতে থাকতে চলে গেল।
A year
later some other family came in as tenants.
এক বছর পরে আরও কিছু পরিবার ভাড়াটিয়া হিসাবে এসেছিল।
The moment
they saw Velan they said,” Old gardener? Don’t be up to any tricks. We know the
sort you are. We will sack you if you don’t behave yourself.”
ভেলানকে যে মুহূর্তে তারা দেখেছিল তারা বলেছিল, “বৃদ্ধ মালি? কোনও কৌশল অবলম্বন করবেন না। আপনি কেমন তা আমরা জানি। আপনি যদি নিজের আচরণ ঠিক না করেন তবে আমরা আপনাকে বরখাস্ত করব “
Velan found
life intolerable.
ভেলান জীবনকে অসহনীয় বলে খুঁজে পেল।
These
people had no regard for a garden.

Fortune,
however, soon favoured him.

The tenants
left.

The house
was locked up for a few years.

Occasionally
one of the sons of the late owner came round and inspected the garden.

Gradually
even this ceased.
ধীরে ধীরে এমনকি এটিও বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।
They left
the keys of the house with Velan.
তারা বাড়ির চাবি ভেলানকে দিয়ে চলে গেল।
Occasionally
a prospective tenant came down, had the house opened and went away after
remarking that it was in ruins.
মাঝেমধ্যে কোনও সম্ভাব্য ভাড়াটিয়া আসে, বাড়িটি খোলার পরে তা ভেঙে পড়েছিল বলে মন্তব্য করে চলে যেত।
A year
later another tenant came, and then another, and then a third.
এক বছর পরে আরেকজন ভাড়াটিয়া এসেছিল, তারপরে আর একজন এসেছিল এবং তারও পরে তৃতীয়জন এসেছিল।
No one
remained for more than a few months.
কেউ কয়েক মাসের বেশি থাকল না।
And then
the house acquired the reputation of being haunted.

Even the
owners dropped the practice of coming and seeing the house.

very nearly the master of the house now.

The keys

When the
mood seized him (about once a year) he opened the house and had the floor swept
and scrubbed.

But
gradually he gave up this practice.

He was too
old to bother about these things.

Years and
years passed without any change.

It came to
be known as the “Ghost House,” and people avoided it.

nothing to grumble about in this state of affairs.

But one day
a car sounded its horn angrily at the gate.
কিন্তু একদিন দরজায় একটি গাড়ি ক্রুদ্ধভাবে তার বাঁশি বাজাচ্ছিল।
Velan
hobbled up with the keys.
ভেলান চাবিগুলি নিয়ে এসে দাড়াল ।
“Have you
the keys? Open the gate,” commanded someone in the car.
“আপনার কাছে কি চাবি আছে? দরজা খুলুন, ”গাড়ি থেকে কোনও একজন আদেশ করলেন।
“There is a
small side-gate,” said Velan meekly.
“একটি ছোট পাশের দরজা আছে,” ভেলান বিনীতভাবে বললেন।
“Open the
big gate for the car!” Velan had to fetch a spade and clear the vegetation
which blocked the entrance.
“গাড়ির জন্য বড় দরজা খুলুন!” ভেলানকে কোদাল এনে গাছপালা সাফ করতে হয়েছিল যা প্রবেশপথটি বাধা সৃষ্টি করছিল।
The gates
opened on rusty hinges, creaking and groaning.
দরজা গুলি মরিচাপরা কব্জায়, ক্যাঁচ্ক্যাঁচ্ এবং কর্কশ শব্দ করে খোলা হয়েছিল।
They went
round the garden and said, “We have to clear every bit of this jungle. All this
will have to go…..”
তারা বাগানের চারদিকে ঘুরল এবং বলল, “আমাদের এই জঙ্গলের প্রতিটি অংশই সাফ করতে হবে। এই সবই যেতে হবে …..”
Some mighty
person looked Velan up and down and said, “You are the gardener, I suppose? We
have not much use for a garden now. All the trees, except half a dozen on the
very boundary of the property, will have to go.”
কিছু শক্তিশালী ব্যক্তি ভেলানকে উপর থেকে নিচে তাকিয়ে বললেন, “আপনি বাগানের মালী, আমি মনে করি? এখন আমাদের কোনও বাগানের জন্য খুব বেশি ব্যবহার নেই। সম্পত্তির দূরের সীমানায় অর্ধ ডজন বাদে সমস্ত গাছকে যেতে হবে।”
A week
later one of the sons of his old master came and told Velan, “You will have to
go back to your village, old fellow. The house is sold to a company. They are
not going to have a garden. They are going to build small houses by the score
without leaving space even for a blade of grass.”
এক সপ্তাহ পরে তাঁর বৃদ্ধ কর্তার এক পুত্র এসে ভেলানকে বললেন, “আপনাকে, বৃদ্ধ মানুষ , গ্রামে ফিরে যেতে হবে। বাড়িটি একটি কোম্পানির কাছে বিক্রি করা হয়েছে। তাদের কোন বাগান থাকবে না। তারা ঘাসের ফলকের জন্যও জায়গা না রেখে স্কোর দিয়ে ছোট ছোট ঘর তৈরি করতে চলেছে।”
There was
much bustle and activity, much coming and going, and Velan retired to his old
hut.
সেখানে অনেকটা ঝামেলা ও ক্রিয়াকলাপ ছিল, অনেকটা আসা-যাওয়া, এবং ভেলান তার পুরানো কুঁড়ে ঘরে ফিরে গেল।
When he
felt tired he lay down and slept; at other times he went round the garden and
stood gazing at his plants.
তিনি যখন ক্লান্ত বোধ করলেন তখন তিনি শুয়ে পড়লেন এবং ঘুমিয়ে পড়লেন; অন্য সময় তিনি বাগানের চারদিকে ঘুরে তাঁর গাছের দিকে তাকিয়ে থাকতেন।
He was
given a fortnight’s notice.
তাকে পাক্ষিকের নোটিশ দেওয়া হয়েছিল।
Every
moment of it seemed to him precious.
প্রতিটি মুহূর্তই তার কাছে মূল্যবান বলে মনে হয়েছিল।
He would
have stayed till the last second with his plants.
তিনি তার গাছপালার সঙ্গে শেষ মুহূর্ত পর্যন্ত থাকতেন।
The sound
of an axe which stirred him out of his afternoon nap.
একটি কুঠার শব্দ যা তাকে তার দুপুরের তন্দ্রার মধ্য দিয়ে আলোড়িত করেছিল।
It was just
two days after he was given notice.
তাকে নোটিশ দেওয়ার মাত্র দু’দিন পরে।
The dull
noise of a blade meeting a tough surface reached his ears.
একটি শক্ত পৃষ্ঠের সাথে মিলিত ব্লেডের নিস্তেজ শব্দটি তাঁর কানে পৌঁচেছিল।
He got up
and rushed out.
তিনি উঠে ছুটে গেলেন।
He saw four
men hacking the massive trunk of the old margosa tree.
তিনি চারজন লোককে পুরানো মারগোসা গাছের বিশাল কাণ্ডটি ফালি-ফালি করে কাঁটতে দেখলেন।
He let out
a scream: “Stop that!”
তিনি চিৎকার করে বললেন: “থামো!”
He took his
staff and rushed at those who were hacking.
তিনি তার কর্মীদের নিয়ে যান এবং যারা কাণ্ডটি ফালি-ফালি করে কাঁটছিল তাদের দিকে ছুটে এসেছিলেন।
They easily
avoided the blow he aimed. “What is the matter?” they asked.
তারা সহজেই আঘাত করা এড়াতে পারে তার লক্ষ্য করা। “ব্যাপারটা কি?” তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিল.
Velan wept.
“This is my child. I planted it. I saw it grow. I loved it. Don’t cut it down…”
ভেলান কেঁদে উঠল। “এটি আমার সন্তান। আমি এটা লাগিয়েছি। আমি এটি বাড়তে দেখেছি। আমি এটা ভালবাসি. এটি কেটে ফেলবেন না … “
“But it is
the company’s orders. What can we do? We shall be dismissed if we don’t obey,
and someone else will do it.”
“তবে এটি সংস্থার আদেশ। আমরা কি করতে পারি? আমরা যদি তা না মানি তবে আমরা বরখাস্ত হব এবং অন্য কেউ তা করবে।”
Velan stood
thinking for a while and said, “Will you at least do me this good turn? Give me
a little time. I will bundle up my clothes and go away. After I am gone do what
you like”.
ভেলান কিছুক্ষণ চিন্তা করে দাঁড়িয়ে বলল, “তুমি কি আমাকে অন্তত এই ভাল বাঁকটি দেবে? আমাকে একটু সময় দাও। আমি আমার কাপড় বান্ডিল করে চলে যাব। আমি চলে যাওয়ার পরে তুমি যা পছন্দ করেন তা করবে ”।
They laid
down their axes and waited.
তারা তাদের কুঠার রেখে দিয়ে অপেক্ষা করছিল।
Presently
Velan came out of his hut with a bundle on his head.
বর্তমানে ভেলান মাথায় একটি বান্ডিল নিয়ে তার কুঁড়ে ঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে এসেছিল।
He looked
at the tree-cutters and said, “You are very kind to an old man. You are very
kind to wait.”
তিনি গাছ কর্তনকারী লোকটির দিকে তাকিয়ে বললেন, “আপনি একজন বৃদ্ধের প্রতি খুব সদয়। আপনি খুব সদয় যে আপনি অপেক্ষা করলেন ।
“He looked
at the margosa and wiped his eyes. “Brother, don’t start cutting till I am
really gone far, far away.”
“তিনি মার্গোসার দিকে তাকিয়ে চোখ মুছে ফেললেন।” ভাই, আমি যতক্ষণ না অনেক দূরে চলেছি ততক্ষণ কাটা শুরু করবেন না। “
The
tree-cutters squatted on the ground and watched the old man go.
গাছ কাটার লোকেরা মাটিতে বসে পড়ল এবং বুড়োটিকে চলে যেতে দেখছিল।
Nearly half
an hour later his voice came from a distance, half-indistinctly: “Don’t cut
yet. I am still within hearing. Please wait till I am gone farther.”
প্রায় আধা ঘন্টা পরে তাঁর কণ্ঠস্বর দূর থেকে এসেছিল, অস্পষ্ট: “এখনও কাটবেন না। আমি এখনও শ্রবণের নাগালের মধ্যে আছি। আমি আরও দূরে না আসা পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করুন।”
