About the Author of We are Seven by William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth [1770-1850] was
one of the greatest poets of nature. He was a major poet of the Romantic
period. His greatest poems are The Prelude, The Daffodils, Tintern Abbey,
London 1802, Ode to Duty, Upon Westminster Abbey etc. He spent his life in the
Lake District of England. The present text is an edited version of his poem We
are seven.
উইলিয়াম ওয়ার্ডসওয়ার্থ (১৭৭০-১৮৫০) ছিলেন প্রকৃতির অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ কবি। তিনি রোমান্টিক যুগের একজন প্রধান কবি ছিলেন। তার সবচেয়ে বড় কবিতা হল দ্য প্রিল্যুড, দ্য ড্যাফোডিলস, টিনটার্ন অ্যাবে, লন্ডন 1802, ওড টু ডিউটি, আপন ওয়েস্টমিনস্টার অ্যাবে ইত্যাদি। তিনি ইংল্যান্ডের লেক ডিস্ট্রিক্টে তাঁর জীবন কাটিয়েছিলেন। বর্তমান লেখাটি তার আমরা সাতটি কবিতার সম্পাদিত সংস্করণ।
A simple
child,
সাধারণ এক শিশু,
That
lightly draws its breath,
মৃদুভাবে নিশ্বাস নেয় টেনে,
And feels
its life in every limb,
অনুভব করে প্রাণ প্রতি অঙ্গপ্রতঙ্গ,
What should
it know of death?
মৃত্যুর বিষয়ে সে কি বা জানবে?
I met a
little cottage girl:
আমি দেখা পেলাম সেই ছোট্ট মেয়ের যে কুটির থাকে
She was
eight years old, she said
তার বয়স ছিল আট, বলল সে
Her hair
was thick with many a curl
ঢেউ খেলানো ঘন চুলের রাশি
That
clustered round her head.
জড়ো হয়ে আছে তার মাথার চারপাশে।
She had a
rustic, woodland air
হাবভাব তার গ্রাম্য, বনের গন্ধমাখা
And she was
wildly clad;
আর সে ছিল এলোমেলো পোশাক পরিহিত;
Her eyes
were fair, and very fair;
তার চোখ দুটি ছিল সুন্দর অতি সুন্দর
-Her beauty
made me glad.
-তার ওই সুন্দর রূপ, করেছিল আমায় খুশি।
“Sisters
and brothers, little maid
“বোন্ ও ভাই মিলিয়ে, ছোট্ট মেয়ে
How many
may you be?”
মোটের ওপর কতজন তোমরা তবে?”
“How many?
Seven in all,” she said,
“কতজন? আমরা মোট সাত,” বলল সে,
And
wondering looked at me.
আর রয়্ল অবাক হয়ে আমার দিকে চেয়ে।
And where
are they? I pray you tell.”
“আর তারা কোথায়? বলো না আমায়। “
She
answered, “Seven are we
উত্তর দিয়ে বলে, “আমরা হলাম সাতজন
And two of
us at Conway dwell
তার মধ্যে দুজন কোনয়েতে বাস করে
And two are
gone to sea.
আর দুজন গেছে সমুদ্রে।
Two of us
in the churchyard lie,
গির্জার প্রাঙ্গনে দুজন আছে শুয়ে,
My sister
and my brother;
আমার বোন্ ও আমার ভাই,
And in the
churchyard cottage I
আর গির্জার প্রাঙ্গনে ওই কুটিরে আমি
Dwell near
them with my mother.
তাদের কাছে থাকি, মাকে নিয়ে।”
“You say
that two at Conway dwell,
“বললে তুমি কোনয়েতে দুজনে থাকে,
And two are
gone to sea,
আরও দুজন গেছে সমুদ্রে,
Yet ye are
seven! – I pray you tell,
তবুও তোমরা হলে সাত! – বলো না আমায়
Sweet maid,
how this may be?”
মিষ্টি মেয়ে, এমনটা কি করে হয়?”
Then did
the little maid reply,
ছোট্ট মেয়ে উত্তরেতে বলে আমায়,
“Seven boys
and girls are we;
“আমরা হলাম সাতটি ছেলেমেয়ে;
Two of us
in the churchyard lie,
তারই মধ্যে দুজন শুয়ে ওই গির্জার প্রাঙ্গনে,
Beneath the
churchyard tree.”
গির্জার প্রাঙ্গনে ওই গাছেরই তলায়।”
“You run
about, my little maid,
“ছোট্ট মেয়ে এদিক-ওদিক দৌড়ে বেড়াও তুমি,
Your limbs
they are alive;
তাই তো প্রানবন্ত তোমার অঙ্গগুলি
If two are
in the churchyard laid,
যদি দুজন থাকে গির্জার প্রাঙ্গনে শুয়ে,
Then ye are
only five.”
তাহলে তো তোমরা কেবল পাচজন। “
“Their
graves are green, they may be seen,”
“তাদের কবরগুলি তাজা সবুজ, ওই যে দেখা যায়,”
The little
maid replied,
ছোট্ট মেয়ে উত্তরেতে বলে বলে,
“Twelve
steps or more from my mother’s door
“বড় জোর বারো পা মায়ের দরজা থেকে,
And they
are side by side.
তারা শুয়ে আছে পাশাপাশি। ”
“How many
are you then,” said I,
“তাহলে তোমরা হলে ক-জনা,” বলি আমি
If they two
are in heaven?”
“তারা দুজন যদি হয় স্বর্গবাসী?”
Quick was
the little maid’s reply,
ছোট্ট মেয়ের উত্তর দ্রুত অতি,
“O master!
We are seven.”
“ও বাবু। আমরা হলাম সাতজন। “
“But they
are dead; those two are dead!
“কিন্তু তারা তো মৃত; তারা দুজন হল মৃত!
Their
spirits are in heaven!”
স্বর্গের মাঝে তাদের আত্মা বিরাজিত!”
‘Twas
throwing words away; for still
কথাগুলো হেল্ফেলা করে বলা; কারণ তবু সে বলে চলে
The little
maid would have her will,
ছোট্ট মেয়ে নিজের ইচ্ছাশক্তি প্রয়োগ করে,
And say,
“Nay, we are seven!”
আর বলে, “না, আমরা হলাম সাতজন। ”
