A tiger was caught in a storm. He had wandered near the village, looking A for something to eat. On the outskirts of that village lived an ill-tempered old woman. The tiger huddled in shelter close to the wall of the woman's hut.
একটি বাঘ ঝড়ের কবলে আটকে পড়েছিল। খাবার খোঁজ করতে • করতে সে গ্রামটির নিকটে ঘুরে বেড়াল। ওই গ্রামের প্রান্তদেশে (সীমানায়) এক বদমেজাজি বৃদ্ধা স্ত্রীলোক বাস করত। বাঘটি স্ত্রীলোকটির কুঁড়েঘরের দেয়াল-এর কাছে কোনোরকমে ঠাসাঠাসি করে আশ্রয় নিল।
The old woman was feeling very ill-tempered that night. The rainwater was leaking through the roof.
ওই রাত্রিতে বৃদ্ধাটি খুব রেগে ছিল। বৃষ্টির জল তার ছাদ দিয়ে ছুঁয়ে ছুঁয়ে পড়ছিল।
"There is no escape from this drip-drip", she muttered angrily, pushing her bed around the room to keep it dry. She shoved the bed and a tin trunk against a wall. The wall shook.
"এই ফোঁটা ফোঁটা বৃষ্টি থেকে রেহাই নেই,” তার বিছানা শুকনো রাখার জন্য ঘরের চারদিকে এটিকে ঠেলে সরাতে সে রাগে বিড়বিড় করতে লাগল। দেয়ালের দিকে সে বিছানা এবং একটি টিনের ট্রাঙ্ক ঠেলে সরিয়ে দিল। দেয়ালটি কেঁপে উঠল।
"This drip-drip will be the death of me!"she shouted.
"এই ফোঁটা ফোঁটা বৃষ্টিতেই আমার মৃত্যু হবে!” সে চিৎকার করে বলল।
The tiger on the opposite side of the wall felt the wall shake and was frightened. "The drip-drip must be a very dreadful creature," he thought.
দেয়ালটির উলটো দিকে বাঘ দেয়ালটির কম্পন অনুভব করল এবং ভয় পেয়ে গেল। সে ভাবল, "ফোঁটা ফোঁটা বৃষ্টি খুব ভয়ংকর একটি জন্তুই হবে।”
Meanwhile, Bholenath, the potter, was out in the night, looking for his donkey in the storm. Suddenly he saw an animal huddled in the dark against the wall of the woman's hut.

"There is my donkey!"Bholenath shouted, and running to the tiger, grabbed it. He pulled the tiger's ears.
"Move, you lazy donkey, or I will give you a hard time!"
"ওই তো আমার গাধা!" বলে ভোলেনাথ চিৎকার করল, এবং বাঘটির দিকে ছুটে গিয়ে সেটিকে খপ করে ধরে ফেলল। সে বাঘের কানগুলি ধরে টানল।
"চল, কুঁড়ে গাধা, নইলে আমি তোকে কষ্টে ফেলবই!"
The tiger was really frightened. "This must be the terrible drip-drip!" He thought.
Bholenath dragged the tiger home and kept him tied by a sturdy rope to a tree near his hut.
বাঘটি প্রকৃতই ভয় পেল। সে ভাবল, এটিই বোধ হয় "ফোঁটা ফোঁটা বৃষ্টি নামক ভয়ানক জন্তু।"

In the morning, Bholenath's wife discovered the tiger tied to the tree and screamed in fear. Hearing her, the neighbours came running out of their huts. Bholenath was sleeping. He came out, too.
The people were all mystified. "Who tied this tiger to the tree?" They asked.
সকালে ভোলেনাথের স্ত্রী গাছটিতে বাঁধা বাঘটিকে দেখতে পেল এবং ভয়ে চিৎকার করে উঠল। তার চিৎকার শুনে প্রতিবেশীরা তাদের • কুঁড়েঘর থেকে দৌড়ে বেরিয়ে এল। ভোলেনাথ ঘুমোচ্ছিল। সেও বেরিয়ে এল।
- লোকেরা সবাই হতভম্ভ হয়ে গেল। তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করল, "কে এই বাঘটিকে গাছটিতে বাঁধল?"
A neighbour said, "I think Bholenath can tell us. I saw him last night dragging an animal through the storm."
এক প্রতিবেশী বলল, "আমার মনে হয়, ভোলেনাথ আমাদেরকে এ ব্যাপারে বলতে পারে। গত রাত্রে আমি তাকে ঝড়ের মধ্যে একটি জন্তুকে টেনে আনতে দেখেছিলাম।"
Bholenath was too frightened to admit his mistake. Everyone looked questioningly at Bholenath. In the meantime, the tiger, disturbed and confused by all the people, had chewed through the rope. It ran away to the jungle. The villagers were relieved.
ভোলেনাথ এতই ভয় পেয়েছিল যে, তার ভুল স্বীকার করতে পারল না। প্রত্যেকেই ভোলেনাথের দিকে সন্দেহজনকভাবে তাকাল।

Soon the news of Bholenath's bravery reached the king. The king was highly impressed. He made Bholenath the Commander-in-chief of the king's army.
Bholenath and his wife were given a huge house to live in.

A few months after that evening, news came that a neighbouring king has declared war. Bholenath and his king gathered at the royal court. The king told Bholenath, "You are the Commander-in-chief of my army.I entrust you with the duty of protecting my state."
ওই রাত্রির কয়েক মাস পরে খবর এল যে, এক প্রতিবেশী রাজা - যুদ্ধ ঘোষণা করেছেন। ভোলেনাথ এবং তার রাজা রাজদরবারে * সমবেত হলেন। রাজা ভোলেনাথকে বললেন, "তুমি হলে আমার - সেনাবাহিনীর প্রধান সেনাপতি। আমার রাজ্য রক্ষা করার দায়িত্ব তোমাকে দিচ্ছি।"
Bholenath came back home in utter despair. "I don't even know how to ride a horse", he told his wife helplessly, "How will I defend our borders against eight thousand enemy soldiers?"
ভোলেনাথ চরম হতাশায় বাড়ি ফিরল। সে হতাশ হয়ে তার স্ত্রীকে - বলল, "আমি তো ঘোড়া চড়তেই জানি না, কেমন করে আমি আট - হাজার শত্রুসৈন্যের কাছ থেকে আমাদের সীমানাগুলি রক্ষা করব?"
"Don't worry," his wife said, "I'll tie you to the horse."

In the morning, the king sent Bholenath a magnificent stallion. Bholenath got up glumly on the horse and his wife securely tied him to it with a rope. The horse did not like the feel of the tight ropes. It reared suddenly and galloped off wildly. Bholenath hung desperately to its mane.
সকালে, রাজামশাই ভোলেনাথের জন্য একটি চমৎকার তাগড়াই ঘোড়া পাঠালেন। ঘোড়াটির ওপর ভোলেনাথ গোমড়ামুখে চড়ে বসল এবং তার স্ত্রী দড়ি দিয়ে তাকে ঘোড়ার সঙ্গে দৃঢ়ভাবে বেঁধে দিল। ঘোড়াটির আঁটোসাঁটো দড়ির বাঁধনের অনুভূতি পছন্দ হল না। হঠাৎ এটি পেছনের পায়ে ভর দিয়ে দাঁড়াল এবং উন্মাদের মতো দ্রুতগতিতে ছুটল। ভোলেনাথ মরিয়া হয়ে এটির ঘাড়ের চুল ধরে ঝুলে থাকল।
Realising that the horse was headed straight for the enemy camp, Bholenath shouted in fear. The horse could not be stopped.
শত্রুশিবিরের দিকে ঘোড়াটির গতি বুঝে, ভোলেনাথ ভয়ে চিৎকার করতে লাগল। ঘোড়াটিকে থামানো গেল না।
Bholenath noticed a large tree with its branches hanging over the road. As the horse galloped under the tree, Bholenath reached up to grasp the branches and pull himself free. But the branches broke away in his hands. The horse had entered the enemy camp.
রাস্তার ওপরে শাখাপ্রশাখা ঝুলছে এমন একটি বড়ো গাছ ভোলেনাথ লক্ষ করল। যেই ঘোড়াটি গাছের নীচে দিয়ে উদ্দাম গতিতে ছুটল, ভোলেনাথ গাছের ডালপালাগুলিকে জাপটে ধরে নিজেকে মুক্ত করতে হাত বাড়াল। কিন্তু তার হাতে ডালপালা সব ভেঙে পড়ল। শত্রুপক্ষের শিবিরে ঘোড়াটি ঢুকে পড়ল।
The enemy soldiers were astonished to see a wild-looking man tied to a fierce stallion, waving branches excitedly. "Help, help!"Bholenath was shouting. The enemy soldiers did not hear him. They were greatly scared.
"This must be some great warrior come single-handedly to defeat us!" The soldiers were overcome with fear and instantly ran away without putting up a fight.
শত্রুসৈন্যরা দেখে আশ্চর্য হয়ে গেল এক ভয়ংকর তাগড়া ঘোড়ায় - চেপে উন্মাদের মতো দেখতে একজন লোক, উত্তেজিতভাবে গাছের - ডালপালা নাড়াচ্ছে। "বাঁচাও, বাঁচাও!” ভোলেনাথ চিৎকার করতে লাগল। শত্রুসৈন্যরা তার গলার আওয়াজ শুনতে পেল না। তারা ভীষণ - ভয় পেল। "এ নিশ্চয়ই কোনো এক বিরাট যোদ্ধা হবে, যে আমাদের পরাজিত করতে একাই এগিয়ে এসেছে!" সৈনিকরা ভয়ে জড়সড়ো হয়ে গেল এবং তৎক্ষণাৎ যুদ্ধ না-বাধিয়ে ছুটে পালিয়ে গেল।
Soon the news of Bholenath's great victory spread. Everyone was amazed that he had defended his state all by himself against eight thousand enemy soldiers. The king awarded him in a public ceremony. Bholenath became a legend.
শীঘ্রই ভোলেনাথের অসামান্য জয়ের খবর ছড়িয়ে গেল। প্রত্যেকেই বিস্ময়ে হতবাক হয়ে গেল যে, আট হাজার শত্রুপক্ষের সৈন্যদের বিরুদ্ধে সে একাই রাজ্যকে রক্ষা করতে পেরেছে। রাজা প্রকাশ্য সমাবেশে তাকে পুরস্কৃত করলেন। ভোলেনাথ কিংবদন্তি হয়ে উঠল।
